It was an exciting morning for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games board chairs, committee, staff, dignitaries and media who attended the official 2019 Games launch at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex on Tuesday.  The Games will host 1,700 athletes from Nunavut, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan who will compete in 16 different sports in and around Swift Current.

“The mission of the Games is to create a memorable Games experience that leaves a sport and human legacy for southwest Saskatchewan,” said Games Board Co-chair Melissa Shaw.  The Games is also expected to have a great economic effect, as the event is estimated to inject about $2 million in Swift Current and surrounding communities.

Swift Current’s own Aleah Nickel was also present to talk about the importance of these events for young athletes.  Nickel competed in wrestling at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games
in Wood Buffalo where she took home a silver medal. Through partnership with the Saskatchewan Games Council, Tansi and Ravi were unveiled as the 2019 Games mascots.  The official website at www.2019wcsg.ca is now live and will have information for athletes, volunteers and the public.

“We can’t put on an experience like this without exceptional community and provincial support,” said Games Manager, Denise Barbier about the 10-day event. The multi-sport event will need
2,000 volunteers August 9-18, 2019.
