500-day countdown to 2019 Games
The countdown is on! March 27, marks 500 days out ‘till the bell is rung to kick off the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, set to take place August 9-18, 2019, in Swift Current.
To celebrate the 500-day countdown, the 2019 Games committee sent out mascot colouring pages to students in the Chinook and Holy Trinity School Divisions this week. Students have been busy colouring Games mascots, Tansi and Ravi and the general public can download a copy from 2019wcsg.ca.
Since the launch of the Games in January, Sask Energy and White Cap Resources have come on board as Gold-level sponsors ($15,000-$25,000) for the Games. “It is great to see the investment of local sponsorship dollars. This event will have a tremendous impact on our community—not only economically, but also on the athletes that participate next summer,” says board co-chair for the Games, Mark Benesh.
Planning is also underway for several test events in triathlon, open water swim and mountain biking. Games board co-chair Melissa Shaw says, “It is exciting for some lesser-known sports to come to our region. The test events, happening this summer, will boost awareness for the particular sport and the Games themselves.” The first official test event will take place on July 15 at Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park for open water swim. There is no charge to attend these events and the general public is welcome to attend.
The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games is a 10-day event that will host 1,700 young athletes to compete in 16 different sports. Be sure to #getinthegame and like or follow the Games on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @2019wcsg for all the latest updates.
